3 is in stores tomorrow and along with verses from expected figures like French Montana and Fabolous, it also features a rare verse from the Baton Rouge rapper Lil Boosie, who may be out of prison in the next six months. He handily out-rhymes label bawse Ross and guest Yo Gotti, once again proving that some of the best writing in rap can come bundled in the gruffest packages. The video itself is as pro forma as low-budget rap clips get - a rented Lamborghini here, gratuitous stripper shots there - which unfortunately undersells an absolutely stellar verse from Gunplay. His newest track is “Gallardo,” the latest single from Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group compilation Self Made Vol. Hence, his music comes in fits and starts, with a video like “Bible on the Dash” picking up organic online buzz and a subsequent scattershot mixtape like Acquitted attempting to capitalize on the sudden attention. Gunplay is an extremely talented lyricist, but he’s a true live-wire who makes little concessions toward pop music.
